Four Top Tips of Successful Songwriters

Here are four tips that will help your songwriting career become more successful.  First you will need character.  Character is about who you are.  Second you will need to hustle. This is the amount of effort you put into your work. The third thing is time management.  The ability to control what you do and when is vital to your success. The fourth thing is risk taking.  Playing it too safe can destroy or even stall your progress.  Include these skills into your strategy for a successful songwriting career and you’ll move forward faster than you ever dreamed!

Character

Someone coined the expression, “character is what you do in the dark.” In other words, when no one is looking, will you behave differently than if someone was looking? If not, then you have character. If you are attacked, be strong—not weak. Don’t be a pushover, but be compassionate, gentle, and flexible—especially on procedure and not principle.

Hustle

Normally, people who make it in the music business big have one thing in common: they are frustrated with the status quo. They will not take what is “common” or “expected” and let that define their lives—they move past it and do extremely well. You must work hard and hustle.

Time Management

We all know that one minute has 60 seconds and that one hour has 60 minutes. One day has 24 hours, and one year has 365 days. But one year also has 525,600 minutes. We don’t reflect on a year in such tiny increments, but perhaps we should. We throw away minutes as if they’ll be around forever, and the reality is that time wasted is time we can never get back. We may miss a deal or opportunity of a lifetime by wasting just a few minutes.

Proper time management is vital as you develop your songwriting career. Maintain to break goals down in to manageable chunks—do that with relation to your day and the time you’ve been given. You’ll achieve far more this way and you won’t be sorry using your time wisely.

Risk Taking

This isn’t gambling, it’s a willingness to be brave, enthusiastic, and to push ahead. People who say no to risks are absolutely going to lose. If you refuse present a new song because you’re not confident of your skills, you will likely be passed over when the opportunity arrives.

Don’t be fearful of rejection; just take it as part of life and you’ll find there’s nothing to be afraid of. This is especially in the word “no”. “No” is just another chance to find a way around an barrier and to use creative problem-solving skills.

So there you have it, four tips to help you become a more successful songwriter. Use these tips to help you move forward in your songwriting journey.

Take some time to answer and reflect over these questions.

1. In what ways can you develop your character?
2. Do you see any flaws in your character that is holding you back?
3. How do you rate yourself as a “Risk-Taker”?  What are some of the way in which you can take more risks
4. Do you feel you have the energy to “Hustle”,  To get out there and do more?
5. How well do you manage your time?  Can you identify any time wasters that can be eliminated.  What are some of the thing you are doing right as far as your Time Management is concerned?

Actions

1. Track your time to find areas where you can improve your time management.  A  journal will help you to keep track of your daily activities and will be helpful in discovering time wasters and those activities that move you ahead.
2. Examine your character and ask yourself if you are someone you can trust.
3. Think of something that you are uncomfortable in doing as it relates to your songwriting career. Now take a risk in doing that one thing. Once you have completed the task reflect on how you feel.
4. When everything is done, Think of one more thing you can do to make it even better.
