What are some important aspects of the songwriting process?

Songwriting involves several disciplines. These include the ability to write a good story. Take that story an turn it into lyrics. The lyric need to have meter and rhyme. Then the words are fused with a melody. Therefore it’s important to write music. A knowledge of music theory is helpful in creating chord progressions. Then the song needs to take some sort of form like: Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus. Then there is the production where the song is recorded. Each of these elements come together in create a song.

  • Songwriter Tip:

As you write, ask yourself three important questions: l. have I heard this before? 2. if so, can I make it a little different? 3. if not, can I write something else? I recommend you ask yourself these three questions every day, several times a day, as you write. No point in finishing a whole song and meticulously producing it only to find you’ve borrowed it from someone else’s work. You have a fingerprint as a artist. Your songs should reflect that. Don’t xerox what other writers have already done. You’re too good for that. Submitted by Molly-Ann Leikin of Songwriting Consultants, Ltd.
