As a songwriter one runs certain risks when one allows another’s input into their work. Legal factors involving copyright and ultimately having to divide royalty’s should the song ever take off is only one, but it could be significant. Here’s one approach based on copyright law: if you’re not sitting down writing words and melody lines and structure, you are merely interpreting not writing. This does not qualify you to share in any of the writer’s proceeds.
