As the music industry gets ever more competitive, the initial decision makers (the agents, publishers, and A&R reps) look for songwriters as much or more than songs. One of the criteria they use to measure their ‘risk’ is to guess how prolific the songwriter is and will be. These decision makers are business decisions made by business people who all too often know little or nothing about music. To compensate, to them there is less risk of finding a good song from a prolific songwriter than there is an excellent song from anybody else. Therefore, the freelance songwriter must be as much a business person as they are a songwriter, have the means to hire the appropriate talent when recording demos, or find and work with a manager.
