    Another thing all songwriters should have handy is either a tape recorder (and it can be an incredibly cheap one) or a pad of paper with a pen. You don’t know how many times people tell me about coming up with something really great only to forget how they came up with it in the first place. Stop to write things down. Tell your tape machine exactly how you’re fingering an unusual chord or playing a stunning riff. Don’t take the chance that your brain is going to remember any of what you’re doing.
